Domain registration and webhosting
First you need to register a domain name (for example yourwebsite.com). You can do this yourself with the domain registrar of your choice *, or I can do it for you. Either way, you just pay the registration fee, which is usually around £8 a year for an address ending .com, a little less for .co.uk. And of course there are lots of other possible endings too. If necessary I can help you find out if the name you want is available.
Then the site needs to be hosted - stored on a server which is accessed whenever somebody visits your site. This is included in the design and maintenance fee. I use a webhosting company called Dreamhost who are very reliable and are an employee-owned carbon-neutral business.
Any time you want, I'll send you the site statistics: you'll be able to see how many people have visited your site, and how often each page has been viewed.
Personalized email addresses
You can have up to 50 free email accounts ending in your domain name, for example you@yourwebsite.com. These are provided by Gmail, and are the same as regular Gmail accounts in every respect apart from the address.
* If you register the domain name with somebody else, check that they will let you "change the nameservers". If not, you'll have to pay for their webhosting as well. Also check to make sure that they don't offer a good deal for the first registration, then hugely increase the price when you want to renew - Yahoo! are a notorious example of this. A reliable and honest UK-based domain registrar is Heart Internet.
